Have a Happy (and Safe) Holiday Season!

December 10, 2021

The holidays are a magical time for children. Be sure to keep these tips in mind to keep your family safe while celebrating the season.

1.   If you have a real Christmas tree, keep it watered so it doesn’t dry out and become a fire hazard. If your tree is artificial, make sure it is made from fire-retardant material.

2.    Do not leave children unattended near open flames including candles, and keep matches and lighters out of their reach.

3.    Keep decorations out of the reach of little ones. Any object small enough to fit through a toilet paper tube can obstruct a child’s airway.

4.    Keep mistletoe, holly berries, and poinsettias out of reach. These plants are toxic to people and pets when ingested.

5.    Use power strips with built-in circuit breakers. Keep cords out of the way and insert electrical covers into unused outlets.

6.    Closely supervise young children when decorating – especially if they handle breakable objects or lighting.

7.    Only purchase lights with the UL Listed seal which certifies the product meets safety requirements.

8.    Make sure your child’s toys are age-appropriate and batteries are not easily removed.

9.    Keep alcohol out of the reach of children. Quickly clean up leftover drinks.

10.    Supervise children and outfit them with the correct safety gear for outdoor activities including ice skating, skiing, and sledding.
